Ah, what sport.
The latest financial reports are out for the L.A. mayoral race, and they tell a tale of cash blown on fancy TV ads and almost $3.5 million saved up for the coming media blitz.
Expect to be assaulted in the next 11 days by glossy 4-color mailers, high-rez video graphics and more statistics, promises, threats, fact-bending declarations and pleas for your vote than you've seen since - well, since October ...

Villaraigosa clobbered his opponents in the the fundraising derby for the period, and it seems Parks' streak of money-magnetism has worn off:
Alarcon - $103,986
Hahn - $153,684
Hertzberg - $229,216
Moore - $5,110
Parks - $80,650
Villaraigosa - $360,223
Here's the lay of the land:
<tr bgcolor="#000000">| Feb. 19 | | Candidate | Contributions | Expenses | Cash on Hand | Personal Exp's | Matching Funds | | Richard Alarcon | $549,287 | $727,110 | $78,688 | $0.00 | $153,532 | | James K. Hahn | $2,930,369 | $2,417,467 | $1,077,149 | $0.00 | $563,720.00 | | Bob Hertzberg | $1,845,797 | $1,739,010 | $779,445 | $3,328 | $667,000 | | Walter Moore | $108,038 | $14,613 | $94,194 | $100,000 | $0.00 | | Bernard Parks | $770,822 | $713,378 | $337,447 | $50,000 | $266,584 | | Antonio Villaraigosa | $1,760,921 | $1,329,341 | $1,098,183 | $0.00 | $667,000 |
Compare these numbers with last month's report, and you'll see that Hahn and Hertzberg have saved barely half of what they spent last period, while Villaraigosa's been more frugal than either of them, and is sitting on the largest chunk of change.
<tr bgcolor="#000000">| Jan. 22 | | Candidate | Contributions | Expenses | Cash on Hand | Personal Exp's | Matching Funds | | Richard Alarcon | $445,301 | $230,018 | $355,912 | $0.00 | $140,484 | | James K. Hahn | $2,776,685 | $834,337 | $2,461,769 | $0.00 | $519,920 | | Bob Hertzberg | $1,616,580 | $755,805 | $1,573,789 | $3,328 | $667,000 | | Walter Moore | $102,928 | $12,699 | $90,999 | $100,000 | $0.00 | | Bernard Parks | $670,172 | $433,262 | $436,788 | $50,000 | $166,937 | | Antonio Villaraigosa | $1,400,698 | $260,304 | $1,681,267 | $0,.00 | $540,873 |
MayorSam notes sadly that Walter Moore has more cash on hand than Richard Alarcon - although the bulk of that is Moore's own money and he's held onto most of it in the latest period.
Meanwhile, Kevin Roderick points out amusingly that the folks in Anaheim, Azusa and Cucamonga (not to mention Camarillo and Anaheim) who watch L.A. TV stations will have to suffer through the same video barrage as the rest of us.
