Debate 3: Wherein the Voters' Eyes Glaze Over
1920 Reads

So, if you saw last night's mayoral debate at the Museum of Tolerance, you saw two old enemies struggling to beat the living crap out of each other.

You saw no give and take, no duel of bright ideas for the city's future, just a thudding slugfest between Jim Hahn and Antonio Villaraigosa, the two flawed career politicians whom an underwhelming minority of Los Angeles voters have chosen to be most-likely-to-lead.

You saw more than I did. I ducked it, and make my comments today based upon news reports in other venues, just as a matter of course. For me, blogging the pre-runoff debates was like sitting on the edge of my ringside seat for a bruising, electric under-card, and then walking out on the main event because the fix is in ...
POWER
Last night saw Hahn, Villaraigosa Clash in Debate, says the Daily News' Rick Orlov, who notes that they interrupted each other frequently, insulted each other often and incited audience members to squabbling so loud that some were almost ejected from the hall.

Last night saw "Bitter Rivals Trade Barbs," according to the L.A. Times, which has resorted to cliche'd headlines because nothing actually happened:

You had pissiness:
"We need more than rhetoric to run a city," Hahn said. "Do you want, you know, a fancy smile and a fancy suit, or do you want somebody who every day rolls up their sleeves and gets stuff done in this city?"

His face as steely as the mayor's, Villaraigosa also spoke harshly.

"We can't afford four more years of corruption probes and stagnation," said Villaraigosa, who lost to Hahn in 2001 before winning a City Council seat two years later. "We need a fresh start."
There was snottiness:
"The question was asked: 'What did you accomplish in two years of being a City Council member?' " Hahn said. "Did you hear any great transportation plans? … No, you said: 'I brought people together.' "

At another point, Villaraigosa chastised Hahn for a lack of openness. He called on him to make public his calendar, as both he and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger have agreed to do. And he told the mayor that he should release to the public the e-mails his office turned over to federal investigators.

"There's not a lot in my e-mails," Hahn responded.

"There's not a lot in your administration, Mr. Hahn. That's why I'm running for mayor," Villaraigosa retorted.
... and character assassination:
"It is about trust. You can't tell people: 'Elect me, I promise to be your council member for four years … and then break that promise," Hahn said. "You can't go to court against the gang injunctions that I was filing as city attorney and then turn around and say, 'Well, I think gang injunctions are a good idea.' "

In response, Villaraigosa snapped: "There you go again, Jim Hahn, mischaracterizing my record…. That's what you do. You blame everyone except taking responsibility for yourself."
Kevin Roderick actually witnessed the debate and declared Hahn the winner.

Matt Szabo declared the opposite but it should be noted that his former boss, Bob Hertzberg, is backing Villaraigosa.

And if you consult the most entertaining, if erratic, political oracle of the public's mood - the comments field in the latest post on Mayor Sam's Sister City - you'll see that the unwashed, anonymous posters there have agreed to emulate the L.A. Times headline mentioned above and continue beating the crap out of each other on behalf of their preferred candidates.

Because what the hell, in the end, it's all just sport.

One month to go. Might as well join in.

Anyone care to wager whether some political depth charge will blow the foundation out from under Villaraigosa's supports?
Whether Steve Cooley's office (or the Times) will dump a big sticky tarball of damaging allegations on Hahn's desk?
Whether the Recall Antonio movement will ever get traction, let alone enough signatures?
Whether voters will stay home in droves on May 17?

Place your bets. We may as well have fun with this spectacle.
