“Artists on the Brink” Presents “Studio 1954,” a socially aware night of surprises

(Los Angeles, CA)-Artists on the Brink, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit, presents “Studio 1954” at downtown’s ArtShare LA located at 801 4th Place. “Studio 1954” is a theatrical collaboration of artists, actors, musicians, dancers, and acrobats performed through a comedic narrative set in 1954. Performances will be held on Fridays (May 9th and 16th) at 8 pm and Saturdays (May 10th and 17th) at 7 pm.

What happens when great ideas are presented before the public is ready for them? Entertainment mayhem. The artist collective, Artists on the Brink, have pooled their talents in the creation of a night of varied entertainment with proceeds to benefit the work of local organization S.C.O.P.E., working to encourage greater voter turnout in 2008, and the Feminist Majority Foundation’s “Get Her Vote Out.”

Just when I think the quality can’t get any better, it does,” says Blank Artistic Producer Noah Wyle. “If I didn’t know these plays were written by teenagers, I would never guess. This is not children’s theatre. It is remarkable to know that there are kids creating art at a level that can be compared to most adults. And by the way, often more entertaining!”

REPLICA OF SIMON WIESENTHAL VIENNA OFFICE NEW AT MUSEUM OF TOLERANCE

LOS ANGELES -- Alan and Susan Casden have contributed a recreation of the office of Simon Wiesenthal, the famed Nazi hunter, at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles where it will be a major interactive multimedia exhibit.
The office is exactly as it was at the Jewish Documentation Center in Vienna that Wiesenthal founded. It includes all of Wiesenthal’s personal library, documents and furniture as well as his many honors including the Legion of Honor and the Congressional Gold Medal.
Wiesenthal, a survivor of the Nazi death camps, dedicated his life to documenting the crimes of the Holocaust and to hunting down the perpetrators still at large. "When history looks back," Wiesenthal explained, "I want people to know the Nazis weren’t able to kill millions of people and get away with it."

“Meeting Simon Wiesenthal 30 years ago sent me on a lifelong journey filled with determination and commitment to fight intolerance and anti-Semitism, to lead the building of this great museum which took over 9 years and to support Israel in every way I can,” said Casden who served for 25 years as the Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, an international human rights agency with an American constituency of 500,000 families.
Casden was a major contributor and served as Building Chair for the Museum of Tolerance and also endowed the Casden Institute for the Study of the Jewish Role in American Life at USC. He has served as a National Vice-Chairman for the State of Israel Bonds campaign and the Chairman of the Los Angeles area bond campaign and in 2006 was honored as the State of Israel Bonds Man of the Year. He also received the Extraordinary Service Medal personally presented by Israel’s Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. Last year he was presented the Israel-American Chamber of Commerce Award in Tel Aviv for his contribution to the Israeli economy. He currently is developing the 400-foot White City Tower in Tel Aviv.

Casden is the CEO and founder of Beverly Hills-based Casden Properties, one of the nation’s largest multi-family housing developers. The company’s latest is Palazzo Westwood Village expected to be an important catalyst for village revitalization with its 350 rental homes and premier retailers led by the popular Trader Joe’s.

Editor's Note: Gregory Siff wrote and is starring in a new play, The Nothing Boys premiering in Hollywood on May 2nd. After meeting him this evening, I asked him to come here to LA Voice to share his story and let people know about the project. Thanks to Greg for dropping in and sharing with LA Voice's readers!

I showed up for my ten-year high school reunion and it was me, and one other student! no one else showed. I wrote a play about it and no we are slated to have a May 3rd world premiere at the Complex in Hollywood. Produced by the writer/executive producer of HBO's Entourage, this new comedy will make a great night at the theatre.

As part of the project, I started a videoblog, and here is my first attempt at it. Enjoy!

WHAT: Michelle Lopez: The Year We Made Contact
New York-based artist Michelle Lopez will mount her first solo exhibition in Los Angeles at LAXART. The project entitled The Year We Made Contact is an ongoing series of sculptures that refer to her interests in popular culture, material decay, and sculpture’s formal properties. Interwoven with branches, the structural fragments show evidence of nature’s forces and suggest the aftermath of an impossible disaster. Lacking origin or narrative, the fragments provide no indication of human presence, time or place, before or after, leaving a space for the viewer’s projection.

Vishal Jugdeo: Surplus Room
For his debut solo exhibition in the United States, Los Angeles-based, Canadian artist Vishal Jugdeo will produce a site-specific sculptural video installation for LAXART. Surplus Room draws upon interests in theatricality, object-relations, and an interrogation of the visual image in a multi-channel video and sound installation. Employing a loose aesthetic language and sprawling visual style, Jugdeo’s installations are colorful, complex articulations of domesticity, workshop production, and the process of artistic labor.

THE NEW LATC is partnering with The LA Theater Initiative to throw a celebratory event called “FRESH PAINT” on Friday, April 18th in the name of the arts. With an eclectic line-up of samplings from THE NEW LATC’s upcoming Spring on Spring! series in addition to supplemental programming from new, young LA-based artists, this FREE event will serve as a venue for like-minded artists of every age and color to meet each other and meet the space.THE NEW LATC’s recent renovations have transformed the historic landmark from a century-old bank into 80,000 square feet of performance and gallery space, including four remarkable stages that range from 99 seats to 492 seats, an antique vault converted into an art gallery, and a prodigious grand lobby that boasts the largest stained glass ceiling on the west coast. A tour through the space is enough to make any artist breathe again.

While every theater’s mission statement mentions the noble attempt of building a community that reaches beyond the stage, THE NEW LATC makes a powerful statement this month by taking serious action in their community building efforts. “FRESH PAINT” marks the first of many events hosted by THE NEW LATC’s admirable partnership with The LA Theater Initiative, an ambitious, young company that is dedicated to bringing together their peers in the heart of downtown to revive the artistic spirit of Los Angeles with a completely different approach. This alliance has become more than just a bond between the old and the new; it demonstrates an artistic, social and cultural commitment to the next generation of Los Angeles.

In the spirit of the new downtown LA and the role of the arts in its development, “FRESH PAINT” is a free event, open to all, that offers a wide range of diverse, street, soul creations. The night will include live music from Semyon Kobialka, Cita La Muñeca Rota, Noah and the Clap, and So Many Wizards, art installations from Gronk and William Deutch, DJ Original Bozak on the turntables, and the Buckworld One krump dancers. The LA Theater Initiative looks forward to working with THE NEW LATC to push their goal of transforming their venue into the bustling artistic community that it is poised to become.

“FRESH PAINT” starts at 9pm on Friday, April 18th at The NEW LATC (514 S. Spring St, LA 90013) Admission is free. Yes, free.

Swimwear at the Standard Reminds Us: Summer's Coming!

Southern California is known for its beaches, mountains and deserts. It is also synonymous with swimming pools, BBQs and plenty of outdoor entertaining. Last night was no exception, Andrew Makay, the Designer and Owner of N2N Bodywear (link to N2N), unveiled his 2008 swimwear-line with a fabulous party at the swanky Standard Hotel in West Hollywood.

More than 250 people crowed the pool area of The Standard Hotel, which overlooks the stunning City of LA, as they came out to support a business that contributes to the local economy. Not even the cold Spring air could keep guests away from watching a show that reflected swimwear that captured the true essence of California style that is admired and copied world-wide.

But even more interesting than the swimwear show was the fact that N2N Bodywear is totally local. Just like American Apparel, N2N Bodywear makes all of its products locally in Los Angeles.

"I am proud of the fact that 100% of our garments are made right here in LA," said Makay. "Even though I could produce the merchandise cheaper overseas, I support our local economy. As long as I can continue to provide my loyal customers from around the globe with a high-quality product, I see no reason to change what I'm doing."

Metro Gallery opens "Unions & Intersections" featuring works by Valentin Toledo

Metro Gallery presents Valentin Toledo’s solo exhibition, “Unions & Intersections.” These new works are inspired by mathematical models set out to define groups and subgroups creating a space that is at once hermetic and permeable. Through his choice medium of glass, acrylic, and polyurethane this artist explores the relationships between pure line, color, and volume, the sum of which defines space. The exhibit will be on display from March 29th, 2008 to May 3rd, 2008. Please join us for the opening Saturday, March 29th, 2008, from 6-9pm.
Born and raised in Spain, Toledo was a successful illustrator for European high-fashion magazines such as Vogue, Marie Clair, and Elle, among others. He then spent several years working as an Editorial Art Director. However, in pursuit of a radical change of life, Toledo set out for Los Angeles, California. LA’s eclecticism and absence of preconceptions brought a sense of liberation that led to these authentic and honest works.

I don’t try to teach anyone anything; each individual has enough with their own search. If the painting makes this search easier, that would be great.”

Los Angeles, CA (February 15, 2008)- The SCI-Arc Gallery is pleased to present MERETTI<inter>LACE, a site-specific installation by Italian architect, fashion designer and SCI-Arc professor, Elena Manferdini.

Elena Manferdini’s installation explores the intricacies of lacemaking at a scale far beyond the intimate scale commonly associated with lace. Painstaking and intricate lace is made by the knotting and intertwining of multiple threads to construct a complex surface. The dynamic dance of lacemaking is brought to the scale of the SCI-Arc gallery. Manferdini’s installation, a complex deep surface, responds to inspirations received from antique Venetian lace making. Merletti, the Italian term for lace, is an inspiration to the Los Angeles-based, Italian architect and fashion designer. Walking in the gallery, the viewer can appreciate the detail of each element that constitutes the overall form, which weaves itself along catenary supporting wires hung from above. But the work best reveals itself ¬– a surface that alternates between the two- and the three-dimensional – from the view from the catwalk above the gallery, where the viewer is able to appreciate the entire interwoven, lace-like structure.

Elena Manferdini
Elena Manferdini graduated from the University of Civil Engineering (Bologna, Italy) and later from the University of California, Los Angeles with a Masters in Architecture and Urban Design. She is the principle of Atelier Manferdini, an interdisciplinary design firm intent on exploring the cutting edge of computer-aided design forms, applied to the fields of engineering, architecture, industrial design and fashion. www.ateliermanferdini.com

Atelier Manferdini has designed for and collaborated with numerous companies including Fiat, Nike, Alessi, Guzzini, Ottaviani, Leucos, Valentino and FolliFollie. Manferdini’s architectural projects have been exhibited internationally in art and architecture museums. Most recently her work was showcased in Skin + Bones: Parallel Practices in Fashion and Architecture, which was on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art , Los Angeles, and is opening at the Somerset House, London in April 2008. Manferdini also teaches design studios and seminars at the SCI-Arc.

Punish Greedy Lenders, Not Needy Borrowers

There is absolutely no denying that the sub-prime lending crisis has screwed a lot of low-income borrowers, and there is no doubt that it was largely (entirely?) caused by some very greedy, very unscrupulous people.

We need severe punishment for those individuals and companies who are complicit in this mess and greater trasnparency in the lending process going forward, but the last thing we need to do is stop lending to low income borrowers.

In the last couple of days there have been two really good pieces-- one in the Wall Street Journal that aruges for continuing the priactice of securitization, and one on newsbusters.com that calls out a Reuters report for fanning the flames of hysteria on a subset of sub-prime lending called "payday lending." Both raise some really good points.

If we take away loan products for low income borrowers we are only going to leave them farther behind.

The current problem with sub-prime lending rests squarely with the crooked mortgage brokers who preyed on unsophisticated borrowers, commiting them to loans they could not possibly afford, and on greedy financial insttutions that then packaged these crappy, sure-to-default loans with other, better loans and sold them as securities to third parties (erasing any liabiliity they might have for the lousy loan they originated).

These are the people that need to be punished, not the low income individuas who want to borrow responsibly in the future.

In the Newsbusters piece, Matthew Vadum (an unapologetic right-winger) makes some really valid points (in between Republican political boilerplate which I will mercifully skip/disregard). First of all he notes that somewhere along the line, all sub-prime lending... all lending to low income borrowers or those who lack sufficient credit, became in the eyes of the MSM "predatory lending." That simply is not the case.

Managed properly, a borrower is not authorized to borrow more than he or she can afford. While it is undeniable that greedy brokers and companies "preyed" on certain borrowers, that doesn't mean the loan instrument itself should be disregarded as "predatory."

Vadum also makes the point that "pay day" lending is nothing more than a short term, high interest bridge loan that is designed to be paid on the borrower's next payday (hence the name). It is not intended, nor should it be treated, as a long term loan, nor should it be used every pay day-- it is an emergency source of funding to be used only when absolutely necessary. If the lenders are manaing the underwriting/risk-evaluation process properly, then the borrower will be paid up and free of the debt obligation by the next pay day.

Bottom line, punishment should be swift and severe for those who exploited low-income borrowers for their own monetary gain, but we should reform and police the low-income lending process not curtail it.

MAPA and HML Applauds Los Angeles City Council on Immigration Resolution but Calls for Action on Stopping Raids

MAPA and HML call for immediate action opposing local raids against the work place and neighborhoods: Eliminate impounding of vehicles for no driver’s license; Declare Los Angeles a Sanctuary City; and Issue municipal IDs to any resident desiring one

Los Angeles, CA. The Mexican American Political Association (MAPA) and the Hermandad Mexicana Latinoamericana (HML) applaud the Mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa, and the City Council for approving a council resolution opposing the oppressive SAVE ACT and the general declaration of opposition to enforcement-only measures by the federal government.

“This is a good start but more urgent action is required by city leaders,” declared Nativo V. Lopez, National President of MAPA and HML.The local elected leadership of Los Angeles can do much more to protect its residents against invasive enforcement action by the Bush administration at both work-places and neighborhoods. In February 2008, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raided the Van Nuys-based computer company Micro Solutions Enterprises and arrested 140 workers and illegally detained dozens of others against their will. This is the type of raids, which target work-places, displace workers, separate families, and create a state of terror in the community.

The increasingly repressive environment created by such wanton enforcement actions requires an opposing environment of protection, sanctuary, and defense for the working families that comprise our community and work-places.

MAPA and HML call upon Los Angeles’ political leadership to take the following steps to demonstrate good faith to the millions of immigrants who have chosen to live, work, pray, and education themselves in this city, and the millions of others who also claim the city of Los Angeles as their home.

1. Demand that the federal government cease and desist from any further work-place and neighborhood ICE raids, an immediate moratorium, until the U.S. Congress approves fair and humane immigration reform; City leaders should convene an urgent meeting with officials of the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department, and ICE to demand that no further raids such as that which occurred at Micro Solutions Enterprises recurs in Los Angeles;

2. Immediately approve a new policy to cease the impounding of vehicles simply due to the lack of a driver’s license in accordance with a Ninth Circuit Federal Court decision already very familiar to the City Council and Mayor’s office;

3. Declare the City of Los Angeles a sanctuary city, similarly as was so declared by Mayor Tom Bradley during another period of anti-immigrant hysteria, and during which Mayor Bradley demonstrated extraordinary courage and political will, and therefore, begin to create a welcoming and protective environment to immigrants;

4. Approve a policy to issue municipal I.D.s to any resident desiring or applying for one irrespective of immigration status, income, age, or homelessness circumstance as a humane and fair public policy approach contrary to the efforts by others to criminalize individuals and de-identify them out of existence due to circumstances many times not in their control.

5. Establish an office of immigrant and refugee affairs to address the myriad needs of the immigrant communities of the city from both a policy and program dimension, and approve appropriate staffing considering the billions of dollars of contributions represented by the immigrant work-force, businesses, and investments accrued to the city.

These are elementary first, but urgent, steps that the city’s political leadership must take to demonstrate good faith, will, and commitment to those who have so endowed this great city. These are steps within the jurisdictional domain of our city fathers and mothers – and not so easily deferred to the federal government, or until the federal government takes action, which in most cases becomes the new pretext to do nothing, but issue laudable platitudes or even verbal rebuke.

We are surely living in difficult times, but however any elected official may feel the heavy burden of public service on his or her shoulders, make no mistake that the weight of society’s problems are never as burdensome as those bore by the immigrants, especially those chosen by circumstances and life to be wanting of legal documentation at the moment. These are the least of these my brethren for whom we are called upon to raise our voices in unison and solidarity that really matters – the kind that changes policy and circumstances of life.

###

Nativo V. Lopez is currently the National President of the Mexican American Political Association (MAPA) and Hermandad Mexicana Latinomamericana (HML), which requires of him full-time advocacy for the civil, human, labor, and immigrant rights of Mexicans, Mexican Americans, and Latinos throughout the United States. He has dedicated his life to these causes since his years as a high school student where he founded the first student movement organization, United Mexican American Students (UMAS). He was born in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles in 1951 to Mexican American parents, and is of both eighth-generation native U.S. born and immigrant stock.
